With failover, a location has two or more connections, for example fibre plus 5G. If the main line drops, the second takes over without anyone having to do anything.
What matters is how fast that happens and whether sessions stay up. With a simple switchover, a phone call or payment transaction still drops; with bonding, existing sessions carry on over the second line.
Failover is a design choice, not a box: it requires two independent paths, separate equipment where needed, and monitoring that reports the switchover.
